He could’ve just written ‘use your preferred search engine,’ but no. But I don’t like being told to use a search engine I dislike instead of my preferred search engine, Qwant, or my second-choice search engine, DuckDuckGo. I agree with the deeper purpose - checking multiple sources.

At other times, I enjoyed being ‘in’ on the ‘joke.’ Raising my awareness of his copywriting techniques may have, ironically, induced my reactance because I noticed how he manipulated me. In behavioral psychology, the term for this is “reactance.” Reactance has the effect of strengthening people’s motivation to do the opposite of what they’re being asked to do. Prospects feel manipulated, and they resent it. Even when they fail, I understand why they fail because he explained the principles. He describes the copywriting techniques he uses in blurbs. This book entertained me more than most novels I’ve picked up in the past year (including a Robert Ryan novel). Only believe what you can confirm with other sources - especially by studying the blurbs of bestselling (and non-bestselling) books. Trawling through the data gives you a chance to spot patterns nobody else has noticed. Even if I spelled out everything I’ve learned, it’s no substitute for your own observations. It makes my nose sensitive to which bits of publishing advice smell right - or wrong. Sifting through evidence - such as obsessively analyzing various titles on Amazon over months - is tedious.
